Equestrian Language

How do we interpret
The sound that horses make?
Whether they nicker, whinny, sigh;
Snort, groan or neigh.
Like most animals,
They don’t make particular sounds
That convey a single idea;
But, they certainly use vocal noises,
To get across the gist of their emotions.
There’s a sigh that seems to express relief,
Or a groan that signals pain;
A nicker of recognition,
Or a snort of excitement!
These sounds can communicate
Anxiety or confidence,
Depending on their general tone;
But, once you cue into
Their body language,
Then their true intent may be known…

It’s a Big Scary World Out There

Why must you be so chary?
Not everything in this world is scary,
Yet you hide away, nearly every day.
You’re so overly cautious, and weary
Of the dangers in this life;
And the weight of stress we must carry,
Struggling through our daily routine,
Even when the situation gets hairy.
If life is a coal mine,
Then you’re the canary;
And, if fears were books,
You’d be a library…

Colorado’s Cold Shoulder

This house is getting older,
After years of neglect
It’s beginning to molder,
Break down and decay.
Now the nights are getting colder,
As the winter draws near;
On the outskirts of Boulder,
Where snow piles and collects
Colorado’s cold shoulder…

Word of the Day: Molder

Irrefutable Report

This plan to present an irrefutable report,
Could result in criminal charges
Related to alleged plots;
But, evidence-free claims
Intended to create chaos
May instead backfire,
And be used against you
As the basis for obstruction of justice…

The absence of evidence
Is patently obvious,
Certainly anybody can see
How fraudulently these claims were made;
No matter how large, complex or detailed.
And, expecting total exoneration,
Is a dream that is destined to fail…

Word of the Day: Irrefutable

Winters Past

The crisp beauty of the first snow
Puts us in a blithesome mood;
We spent the morning making angels,
And reveling in the joys of winter…

As we progressed into the afternoon,
Building men out of snow became our new goal.
So we gathered up berries, branches and carrots;
To craft their arms, eyes, mouth and nose…

With night approaching, our family was complete;
A mother, a father and three kids, now stood strong
In the vast expanse that is our backyard…

Then, just as the night time fell,
We huddled inside by the warmth of the fire;
With hot cocoa in our hands,
Sharing stories of winters past,
And all of the fun that was to be had…

Strive On

Omens
May show us signs
Of events yet to be;
Trust in the auguries you see
Appear…

Don’t fear
What you can’t grasp;
Understanding is key
To attaining the new knowledge
You seek…

Be calm,
And stay serene,
Even when times get hard;
Always keep an open mind, and
Strive on…

One With The Sea

Deep in the arctic ocean,
Drifting about, to and fro;
Massive sheets of ice, they float,
Creating dozens of independent floes…

They lumber through the waters,
Moving so haphazardly;
Upon them, seals and penguins
Will sometimes take their rest, or frolic with glee…

Though once they were apart of
The land, they have broken free;
Now they are destined to drift,
Until they melt, and become one with the sea…

Word of the Day: Floe

Preternatural Visions

Quietly,
The sun, it did rise;
In the east,
So slowly,
Illuminating us
With its shining rays…

A dull mist
Creeping through the trees,
Fills us with
Mystery;
As preternatural
Visions fill our heads…

Transluscent
Spirits now appear
By the streams,
In forests
Where we once walked as children;
And, now, in our dreams…

Defeat The Decay

While searching garage sales, we happened to see
So many items that did brighten our day;
But, best of all was this vintage vanity,
With a broken mirror and drawers worn grey.
It had so much damage, we got it for free,
The owners decided to give it away;
Provided that we give them the guarantee
Of instauration, to defeat the decay…

Missing Persons

Bursting into his brother’s room, Ivan irrupted,
Talking so fast about the latest mystery,
That occurred last night; a boy was abducted,
Adding to our city’s macabre history…

Though once our town was quiet, peaceful and concordant,
Our amicable lifestyle has been corrupted;
By a kidnapper, who is so abhorrent,
Our daily routines are now being disrupted…

This miscreant has caused us such misery,
It has made us all quite cynical;
So we urged the police to end his treachery,
And ease our minds, by bringing down this criminal…

Ostracized Gadfly

It seems that you love to criticize,
Much more than you care to sympathize;
Pointing out flaws of others, just because
You enjoy cutting them down to size…

This tactic that you keep deploying,
To others, is getting annoying;
And it’s sad to me, that you can’t see,
The relationships you’re destroying…

Must you consistently poke and pry,
Just like a provocative gadfly;
Questioning your friends, until they all end
Up disowning you, for asking why…

Melody & Malady

His music moved millions,
And inspired masses;
His lyrics, apposite,
Speaking of redemption.
Though his life on earth
Was fraught with illness,
He fought malady,
And brought us such hope;
A master of melodies,
The voice of a generation,
Whose impact can not be denied…

The Stoic Approach

Stay
Strong,
Rely
On courage
To carry you through;
The stoic approach works wonders,
When faced with situations which move us to anger…

Keep
Calm,
Remain
Phlegmatic,
Even when it seems
Like the odds are stacked against you;
Challenges are merely a test of your fortitude…

Our Humble Empire

Our emperor has been so magnanimous
Over the course of the last several years,
Reforming the rights of our society;
Building new roads, aquaducts, stables and schools.
Reinforcing the army, to quell our fears,
Investing in art and inventing new tools;
Our empire grows stronger with each new day!…

As he has fulfilled each and every promise
That he has made, since ascending to power;
In return, we’ve given him our loyalty,
Long may he reign over our humble empire!…

Three Cheers For The Headliner!

We all waited, so patiently,
For the band to come take the stage;
When the spot light lit up a cage,
The music began hastily…

The singer came out gracefully,
Delighting us with his new songs.
Gratefully, we listened along,
And plaudited with all our might;
Hoping that this magical night,
With enough cheers, could be prolonged…

Rambunctious Randy

Rambunctious Randy, he’s
Always so full of energy; and, with his
Mothers lack of discipline, that
Boy has become a nuisance
Upon this once quiet neighborhood.
No amount of Ritalin
Can seem to calm him down,
The other children avoid him
In the park and on the playground; so
Over time he has learned
Unique ways to entertain himself.
Setting bags of poop on fire, leaving it on the front porch, then
Ringing the doorbell and running away;
Arranging rows of apples across busy streets,
Nailing dead birds to the trunks of trees. His
Day to day routine is full of mischief and mayhem,
Yet, what he really needs is someone who loves him…

Cherished Keepsakes

Every year, we adorn our Christmas tree
With a variety of bibelots;
Each one, a cherished keepsake,
That evokes fond memories.
A guitar from our uncle,
Which lights up red, and
Plays “Jingle Bell Rock”;
An elf from our aunt,
That watches over us,
Perched on it’s shelf.
A nativity scene from our cousin,
From which, one of the wise men is missing;
A baby blue Coup Deville from grandpa,
The exact replica of the one
He used to drive us around in as kids.
And, placed on top for all to see;
A macrame angel, handwoven by our grandma,
Back in 1973.
All of these keepsakes which adorn our tree,
Remind us of the wonders of
A cherished family…

Hidden Kingdom

Just beneath our feet,
There lies a hidden kingdom
That is rarely seen…

But, if you slow down,
And enhance your awareness;
Treasures may be found…

They hide among trees,
Between roots and fallen leaves,
Feeding off dead things…

Yet, there nature, is
Not that of malcontent; but
Of benignity…

Stick To Your Convictions

Stick to your convictions,
Do not hesitate;
When it comes to happiness,
Only fools lie in wait…

Be true to yourself, and
Stick to your convictions;
Only you can determine
The aim of your intentions…

Do not vacillate,
When choosing your commitments;
Stick to your convictions,
They will help to guide you through…

Though we all have worries
About the human condition,
Ignore your anxieties, and
Stick to your convictions…

The Burden of Self Doubt

She sits in silence,
Staring blankly at a wall;
Overwhelmed by the
Sorrow, swelling up inside,
How it makes her feel so small…

She wants to express
The depths of her emotions,
Get it off her chest
And find joy in the present;
Yet, she remains reticent…

Some how, she must find
A way to release her thoughts,
And not be weighed down
By the burden of self doubt;
Then, she may find, peace of mind…

Shrunken Society

Ruby was captivated by
The coruscant miniature village,
In the holiday window display;
Complete with twinkling lights,
Snow covered cottages, and
Even an electric train!
Her imagination ran wild,
Envisioning many different scenes;
Kids having a snowball fight
Between tiny trees,
Parents buying presents
And wrapping them with glee,
Snowflakes falling all around
Caught on the gentle breeze.
In her mind, she is among them,
Part of their shrunken society;
Where each day feels like Christmas,
As long as you just believe…

And So It Begins

Once a year,
At the end of July,
We all come together
At our spot by the river;
To join with friends
And make merriment,
Regaling in our festal nature…

All our friends will be there
To share their summer stories,
Amidst laughter and dancing,
Delighted by creativity
And captivating melodies…

This festival of fun,
On the banks of the McKenzie;
Where friendship and joy,
Between like-minded girls and boys,
Is cultivated easily…

On those fateful days,
As July nears it’s end,
One phrase sticks out in our minds;
And so, it begins…

Reflecting On Meaningful Memories

During our drive to the coastline,
We reflect on the past,
As we prepare ourselves for a new year;
Remembering the good time with those we hold dear,
Meaningful memories
That will linger within our minds…

The longer we excogitate,
The happier we feel,
To be part of such a loving community
Has made us appreciate how abundantly
Full our lives truly are;
May that love always radiate…

Holiday Craze

The holidays
Are so crazy,
The ways we try
To supply joy;
By buying food, trinkets and toys…

Though some feel blessed,
Others stress out;
Obsessing with
Every gift they
Wrap swiftly, before giving away…

Some families
Sing with glee, and
Agree to share
How they care with
Prayers, food and gifts…

While some, like Jane,
Feel insane, and
They strain their minds
Just to find the
Right kind of vodka…

As Jane felt her
Eyes welter, John
Held her closely,
And slowly stroked
Her flowing hair; to help her cope…

Word of The Day: Welter

Crowded Christmas Carol

Christmas comes just once a year,
Most of the time, it’s filled with cheer;
But, this one has us feeling down,
Cause there’s too many people around…

O! The holidays should bring us joy,
Smiles and gifts, for all the girls and boys;
But, this year we’re just getting coal by the pound,
Cause there’s too many people around…

Santa didn’t come in his big red sleigh,
To bring us all the presents, on Christmas day;
And, the reindeer are nowhere to be found,
Cause there’s too many people around…

No, the snow didn’t fall down from the sky,
And my ugly sweater made all the children cry;
Though I’d like to smile, I can’t help but frown,
Cause there’s too many people around…

When the dinner bell rang I was in the john,
So, by the time I reached the table all the best food was gone;
Now I’m stuck with cold gravy and a mashed potato mound,
Cause there’s too many people around…

Kids running around left the place in shambles,
And, when my little cousin knocked over a candle;
The Christmas tree, it just burned to the ground,
Cause there’s too many people around…

I’d rather be at home in my cozy bed,
Warm and recumbent, dreams swirling through my head;
But now I’m stuck in traffic, trying to get back out of town,
Cause there’s too many people around…

Word of The Day: Recumbent

Choose Your Faith

As the winter sun set,
It’s rays streamed through the clerestory,
Casting golden light
On the congregation below;
Providing a warm contrast
To the cold world outside…

Here, in this house of worship,
Saints live among stained glass;
Depicting their pious deeds,
Done in service to the Lord.
Forever canonized, by their
Intercession of the blessed,
After death…

To live a life that’s faithful,
For some may seem absurd;
But, to others, is a saving grace
From the horrors of this world.
Only you can decide
Which beliefs work best for you,
And make you feel at peace…

Major Malfunctions

For yearns, we’ve been working
On our newest invention;
A worm hole, to see into
An alternate dimension…

We labored on, until our
Resources were depleted;
And, with one final wrench turn,
It was declared completed…

As we prepared to test it,
The tension was palpable;
Though, our boss had assured us,
His plans were infallible…

But, the rest of us workers,
We all had our suspicions;
About the validity
Of his lofty ambitions….

So we gathered together,
And voiced our objections;
But, he simply dismissed us,
Ignoring our directions…

There was nothing more to do,
So we sat, in compunction;
But, our plans went to shit, as
It began to malfunction…

Survival of The Fittest

They say that you can’t stop progress,
So just learn to go with the flow;

Even if we must arrogate,
It’s survival of the fittest…

Keep On Keepin’ On

When the road seems rough ahead,
Just keep on keepin’ on;
When the world is full of dread,
Just keep on keepin’ on.
Don’t let sorrow bring you down,
Nor turn your smile into a frown;
In time, true peace it will be found,
Just keep on keepin’ on…

Though this life may cause you stress,
Just keep on keepin’ on;
Though you may feel quite depressed,
Just keep on keepin’ on.
When your self esteem, it shrinks,
And your heart begins to sink;
Know you’re stronger than you think,
Just keep on keepin’ on…

When you don’t feel so heroic,
Just keep on keepin’ on;
Become sylphlike and stoic, and
Just keep on keepin’ on.
Once you find true peace inside,
From your joy, you’ll never hide;
Let your conscience be your guide, and
Just keep on keepin’ on…

Into Infinity

The magic of bubbles
Lies in their fugacity,
Making each moment
Of their brief dance
Through the afternoon sunlight
All the more precious,
Knowing they’ll soon disappear…

How fleeting yet awe inspiring
Is their temporary presence,
Delicately balanced on the summer’s breeze,
Filling our hearts and minds with glee;
Existing solely to entertain,
Before dissipating into infinity…

All Good Things Must End

The final day of the year is here,
December 31st.
For some, it’s a day of preparation;
For others, a day of rest.
Yet, as we look back, and
Reflect upon the past;
Is it with oneiric nostalgia
And admiration,
Or lamasted regrets
For that which could have been
But never came to fruition?…

Either way, we must remember,
Tomorrow is a new day, and
That all sorrow shall pass;
Just as all good things must end.
It’s the mindset that you keep,
As you continue moving forward,
That determines the outcome
Along your chosen path.
May you continue to find
Happiness, peace and joy!…
