November 2023 Poetry

Valetudinarian Valerie

Valerie sat in the waiting room,
Anxiously fiddling her fingers;
Lamenting the fluorescent lights that hang,
Ever so low, above her head.
Tormented by visions of
Ulcers and tumors, her
Dreams have turned to nightmares;
In which, her body is failing, rapidly.
Night after night, she
Awakes in a cold sweat; heart
Racing like a jet engine,
Igniting in cold weather.
After weeks of sleepless nights,
No rest could she find; and, in her
Valetudinarian nature, sought professional help repeatedly.
Arriving at the hospital one last time,
 Limping through the automatic doors;
Energy depleted, she collapsed on the cold floor.
Room spinning around her,
In intricate patterns, as she
Embraced the final kiss of death…

Overly Emotional In Fancy Chateaus

Can you show
A little more couth, while we
Visit this fancy chateau…

You have been
Overly emotional,
Since we landed in Berlin…

I can’t find
Any way to calm you down,
When you’re in this state of mind…

You just pull
Against me, like a toddler,
Totally intractable…

Maybe I should
Give up trying to control
Reactions, learned in childhood…

And have fun,
Just grit my teeth and bear it,
Until our vacation’s done…

The Watchful Eye

Light rain, falling on dew soaked grass,
The wind barely whispering through the trees;
A mother and fawn, kneel to drink from a stream,
Autumn has found it’s way to our neck of the woods…

As we walk between lush green firs,
Peppered with leaves of red and gold;
Protruding from perennial trees,
Which change their hues with the seasons…

We wander through the ominous mist,
With just a mizzle falling upon us;
The perfect conditions for foraging,
Here, in the Pacific Northwest…

With out baskets filled up to the brim,
Our adventure comes to an end;
Grateful for the abundance,
That nature provides to the watchful eye…

Mettlesome Mistress Bradstreet

Oh, mettlesome mistress Bradstreet, she’s so
Full of determination and mischief;
Constantly picking fights,
And acting truly malicious
Towards the wives of the men she desires.
Informing them of all that conspires,
When they don’t show enough
Love to their husbands; she swoops in and off they go…

To explore the world of debauchery,
And give in to their most primal urges,
Lost within the moment
As their flesh connects and merges.
A symphony of sweat forms between them,
As they give in to original sin;
Commitment, she purges,
When she seduces men into adultery…

Celebrating Absurdity

Morning mist is pouring over these pages,
In the distance, birds sing their symphony;
Bringing bliss to the center of my eardrums
As, my wrists, move feverishly…

Scribbling lines in this notebook
Helps me find peace and serenity,
And eases my mind, bringing calmness;
As, the time, it slowly fades into infinity…

In a state of phantasmagoria
We may escape our reality,
And create such vivid visions,
Which cerebrate absurdity…

Parsimonious Work Ethic

Why must you be so parsimonious?
Always cutting corners on your tasks,
Your work, it suffers when you do so;
And makes it so nobody wants to be paired with you.
Your negative attitude, it brings others down,
And harms our overall morale;
When you are on the work site,
It’s like a dark cloud hangs over us,
Turning our smiles into frowns.
When you go home tonight,
Think hard about how your actions
Effect the rest of the crew…

Fictitious Romances

See her sashay her way across the room,
She must have so much confidence.
As she goes by, all the fellas, they swoon;
And dream about fictitious romance.
O! She’s got them all wrapped around her fingers,
Like a fancy collection of rings;
But, she ain’t looking for fictitious romances, no
She’s not interested in summer flings.
The love we see in the movies,
Isn’t anywhere close to the real thing;
They’re all just fictitious romances,
That fade like flowers in spring…

Variegated Leaves

Variegated leaves, fall
All around us; the
Rush of autumn
Is making it’s debut.
Early November, the days are
Growing shorter,
And the nights
They are getting cold.
Every autumn, brings the
Death of summer,
Leaves change colors as they
Escape from the trees; yet
Autumn is also a
Valuable season for
Expelling past anxieties, and
Summoning a new sense of inner strength…

Limerence Limerick

She laid in her bed, stuck in a deep trance,
Dreaming of men she would like to romance;
No longer fixated
On those she once dated,
For new love, she’s willing to take a chance…

Now, in a state of limerence, she stays;
Obsessed with romance, in a love struck haze.
Oh so desperate to find
A partner who is kind,
With whom, she may share the rest of her days…

Ambien Dreams

Crashing down, in the bed,
To rest his weary head once more;
Lassitude strikes his core
As, the clock, it hits 4 AM…

He pops 2 Ambiens,
Hoping that he’ll begin to dream;
Oh, but, they only seem
To bring on such extreme nightmares…

Quotidian Endeavors

As much as I enjoy
This quotidian endeavor,
Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with
Pursuing a daily regiment.
But, once you get it
Hardwired into your routine,
It seems like second nature;
And, your doubts, they all recede.
So don’t be afraid to fail
From time to time,
For it provides you with
A new opportunity for growth…

Mainstream Versus Underground

I want to be
Able to see
All of the fans
Up in the stands,
Screaming with glee
When they see me
Grab my guitar
Like a rock star.
Songs, I would sing,
How they would ring
Over the crowd;
Blaring and loud,
For all to hear
And give a cheer!
But, all of my songs
Go on too long,
They’re too spacious
And vexatious;
So I must thrive
In bars and dives,
Until I find
Music designed
To shake asses
And move masses.
But, until then,
I’ll stay within
The underground
And never frown;
As, the mainstream,
Obviously
Is not for me…

Stuck In The Doldrums Again

Stuck in the doldrums again,
With nothing left to gain;
I reach for a bottle of gin,
And begin to dive in…

I’ve never been one to complain
But, my life, has become so plain;
That now all I truly feel is pain,
Sinking in deeper and deeper, like a pin…

I can’t help but feel so small,
Like a lost child in a mall;
And, even though I’ve given my all,
I still can’t find my Ma…

It feels like I can no longer relate
With the things that make others elate.
As, the hour, it now grows late;
I reach for just one more ale…

Traditional Masterpieces

This collection of ancient artifacts,
That are featured in our exhibition,
They are coeval in their aesthetic;
Each piece has a quality which attracts
It’s viewers at the perfect position,
With a pull that seems almost magnetic.
These masterpieces we have on display,
The overall theme, it is tradition;
Some are playful, some are prophetic, but
Each have a meaning they wish to convey
And stick…

Her coy manipulations,
They ingratiate
The people who’s approval
She desires most;

Awaking To A New Day

As the incipient rays of sunlight
Broke through the horizon,
The world slowly awakened to a new day;
The last vestiges of night,
Fading like a drunken memory,
As early birds begin to take flight.
Now we must say goodbye
To the moon once again,
And embrace the coming dawn…

Nostalgic Ignorance

Please don’t continue
To pretend you knew me
As more than an acquaintance;
For, my patience, is wearing thin.
Back when we were growing up,
Showing love was never your strong suit;
Instead you preferred to harass
The scared masses, between their classes.
Those so afraid of confrontational
Situations, they’ll simply let you have your way;
Turning red in the face as
You rage at them, so blindly.
Acting so apoplectic, and
Hectically swinging your arms,
Like an ape in a zoo;
Too set in your ways
To behave like normal children do.
So, next time you say
We played together as kids,
Remember this fact;
Back then you were an asshole,
And I have no desire
To aspire to be friends as adults…

Preparing For Our First Date

Our first date, it is fast approaching,
Swiftly encroaching;
Soon it will be
Just you and me…

Where should we go on this evening?
What could I bring
To show I care,
And what to wear?…

Perhaps at my favorite diner,
Down on Minor
And 2nd St;
There, we can meet…

Where the portions aren’t exiguous,
And the cheeses,
They are gourmet;
What do you say?…

Our Irreproachable Leader

Our leader is irreproachable,
So flawless in his character,
He is loved by his people;
And he reciprocates,
By fighting for us
When times get hard,
And begin
To look
Bleak…

His leadership, it inspires us
To take up arms, and fight for him;
We will achieve victory
If together we stand,
And fight for our land
With all we have.
Our pride will
See us
Through…

The Alcoholic’s Plight

Why must you constantly dribble away,
Laying in bed while the sun shines, so bright?
Wasting the hours that make up your day,
And drinking yourself to death every night.
Have you been taken over by the plight
Of addiction, slowly rotting your brain?
Attempting to cope with the daily pain
And stress you receive, in your lonesome life.
O! It seems to be driving you insane,
Having to live with such consistent strife…

Red Eyed Babies

Stuck on another red eye,
Peering out of my window
As the sun begins to rise;
Feeling Incommodious,
Packed into seats like sardines…

Still we continue to fly
Yet, our progress, feels so slow.
Next to me, a baby cries,
The sound is so hideous;
So disruptive and obscene…

No one can figure out why,
This kid’s frustration, it grows;
With tears pouring from his eyes,
We just act oblivious,
As it kicks and wails and screams…

We all watched it’s mother try
To wipe the snot from his nose.
Then, finally, to our surprise;
He quits his annoying fuss!
Now we can return to dreams…

Tickling Funny Bones

I adore
Your waggish sense of humor;
How it leaves me wanting more…

You’re so coy
And reserved, on the outside;
Yet, your antics, bring such joy!…

On that stage
You are in your element;
And, our boredom, is assuaged…

As you poke
And prod at our funny bones,
With each hilarious joke…

To Elope With Compassion

All that we truly need is just you and me,
On this beautiful day, when the sun shines bright;
Without other people, then we can be free
To do as we please without a fuss or fight.
No, we don’t need folderol to show we care;
Just true love, compassion and these rings we share.
If I could be your husband, and you my wife,
I promise to love you the rest of my life…

Arriviste Inheritance

Our tiny town has a new resident,
Living on top of the highest hill,
Where he has built a mansion;
With more rooms than he could ever hope to occupy.
He recently inherited
A small fortune, from his long lost uncle,
Who was the only family member he had left.
But he is so young,
Naive and arriviste,
Squandering his riches on fancy cars and other material things;
If he is not more cautious with the way he spends his money,
He’ll blow through it
In the blink of an eye, and end up out on the cold streets…

Crepuscular Creatures

As the sun, it begins to sink
Beneath the horizon line,
Crepuscular creatures make their debut.
Predators sneak between shadows,
Reliant on the fading light;
Teeth gnarled and claws spread,
Hungry for fresh blood to drink.
Animals must learn from fight or flight,
These instincts have helped us evolve
Over centuries; both predator and prey
Have developed new ways to evade or attack.
Before we have a second to think,
Our instincts pick up the slack,
How quickly they react to
The obstacles which stand in our way.
As twilight now descends,
Giving way to the coming night,
So ominous and dark;
The circle of life begins anew,
Where crepuscular creatures reside…

As Winter Descends

I’ve been feeling so sluggish, tired and uninspired;
Since winter descended upon our city.
The morning dew replaced by icicles,
Urging us to return to the warmth of our sheets.
O! Sometimes I feel like Ben Affleck, in that meme
Where he just can’t seem to get through the day;
Smoking a cigarette as grey clouds hover over,
And a sense of defeat lingers, metaphorically.
Perhaps I should be more assiduous with my routine,
Become diligent in my quest for better health,
Shed the old habits that once defined me;
And truly grow into myself…

Dubious Conclave

We should all be suspicious
Of those who crave more power,
Their intent is malicious,
High in ivory towers…

They’ll oppress the citizens
That inhabit their cities,
With violent discipline,
Slavery and false decrees…

Until the land’s forsaken,
And the people are forlorn;
Unless their minds awaken
And they fight for new reforms…

They will suffer tyranny
Living under this regime,
As they acts so viciously,
Pushing them to new extremes…

It is still a mystery,
Just how many were enslaved,
Throughout the vast history
Of this dubious conclave…

Perambulating In The Pacific Northwest

How we love to perambulate,
All across this beautiful state
Where we choose to reside.
With so many trails we can find,
It truly satisfies our minds,
And makes us feel alive…

Anywhere we choose to explore,
In the forest, by the sea shore,
Or high on mountain tops;
Our sense of adventure will show
Us wonders, wherever we go,
At any of our stops…

Lectures On Life’s Design

Clearly speaking words,
Her annunciation and attention to details,
Enlightens us to her overall theme
That she will be speaking on.
As, her perspicuous nature,
Makes audiences more receptive
To lectures about life’s design;
And our place in this universe…

This, in place, and our design;
Life’s about lectures
To receptive audiences.
Making nature perspicuous,
Her, as on speaking;
Be will she, that theme.
Overall, her to us, enlightens details
To attention and annunciation;
Her words, speaking clearly…
